The scholarly curation was carried out by the historian Regina Wonisch in collaboration with a team of curators from the association who contributed to the conception of the content. The association received scientific and conceptual advice from contemporary historian Bertrand Perz . The Steyr Work World Museum is responsible for educational support. The exhibition design comes from Bernhard Denkinger . It has been published in several architecture magazines.

history

The tunnel itself was built in 1943 by prisoners from the Steyr-Münichholz sub-camp and served the civilian population as a shelter during bombing raids. The aim of the attacks was arms production in and around Steyr.

The exhibition was opened on October 25, 2013 after an idea by Karl Ramsmaier after a planning phase of more than 10 years. In the 1990s, there was already the idea of creating an exhibition on the subject of National Socialism, forced labor and the concentration camp in Steyr. The building intended for this, the last barracks of the Steyr – Münichholz concentration camp, was illegally demolished in 1993, which threatened to fail the idea.
In 2003 the Mauthausen Committee started a new initiative for the implementation of an exhibition on forced labor and National Socialism. In 2010 the Viennese architect Bernhard Denkinger was commissioned to work out a design proposal for an exhibition in the so-called Lambergstollen, which was realized in 2011-2013.

The path through the 140-meter-long, U-shaped tunnel system follows a chronological structure and illuminates the years 1938 to 1945. A special focus of the exhibition is on the Steyr – Münichholz subcamp and the forced laborers in Steyr. The history of the resistance in Steyr and the handling of the Nazi past in the years from 1945 to the present are also prominently discussed .

The memory of the concentration camp prisoners, forced laborers and contemporary witnesses is taken into account through the use of quotes and reports from individuals. These biographical elements are supplemented by historical documents and photographs that also explain the historical context. Original objects were not used due to the moisture in the memory gallery.
