La Fura dels Baus ( Catalan for 'The Ferret from Els Baus') is a Catalan theater company . It defines itself as an urban theater group that explores scenic and musical paths beyond the traditional. The group tries to integrate music, movement, natural and artificial materials, new technologies and, last but not least, the audience into their performances.

History of La Fura dels Baus

La Fura dels Baus was founded in 1979 by Pere Tantinyà, Quico Palomar, Carles Padrissa and Marcel·lí Antúnez in Moià , but soon after relocated to Barcelona , where the group around Pep Gatell , Jordi Arús, Àlex Ollé, Jürgen Müller , Hansel Cereza and Miki Espuma was expanded.

In the course of the 1990s, the group expanded its artistic projects to include spoken theater, “digital theater” and the realization of major events . For the first time, La Fura dels Baus caused a sensation with the design of the opening ceremony of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. The ensemble was later hired for large advertising campaigns by Pepsi and Mercedes-Benz .

In accordance with its principle of active participation by the audience, La Fura also develops projects on the Internet such as work in progress 97 , with which scenes from various venues were put together in a digital theater.

With Atlàntida by Manuel de Falla and Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien (The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian) by Claude Debussy , the group ventured into the world of opera . La Fura dels Baus also staged La damnation de Faust (Faust's Damnation) by Hector Berlioz at the 1999 Salzburg Festival .

In the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia of Valencia staged the troops the Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner with Zubin Mehta on the podium, which was brought from 2007 to 2009 gradually on the stage and in June 2009 completely on stage and in autumn 2009 was seen on television ( 3sat ).

With the film Faust 5.0 , La Fura dels Baus finally entered the cinema business. Furthermore, the group can also be admired in Tom Tykwer's Perfume - The Story of a Murderer in the furious mass orgy scene, which was rehearsed like a choreography.

Current projects are Al-Mariyat Bayyanna , the opening ceremony of the XV. Mediterranean Games in Almería 2005, and Metamorfosis . La Fura dels Baus also performed with Global Rheingold at the launch of the Duisburg Local Hero Week as part of RUHR.2010 .

In 2010 Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser was staged at La Scala in Milan under Zubin Mehta with the participation of the ensemble from La Fura dels Baus. The group took part in the festivities on the occasion of the opening of the Musiktheater Linz with the spectacle Ein Parzival to music by Richard Wagner.

In 2019 La Fura dels Baus staged Carl V. in the Munich State Opera.
