The strange adventures of Herman van Veen (De wonderlijke avonturen van Herman van Veen) is a children's and youth television series from 1977 and was broadcast on the ARD program. The singer, songwriter and entertainer Herman van Veen has very strange adventures. He lives in a windmill with his wife Marlous and eight other artists and musicians . It stands in the middle of the Olympic Village in Munich. The pictures in the main room of the mill are the starting point for the stories. Van Veen can bring them to life, which is why visitors or he himself disappear again and again in the pictures.

The series was mainly filmed in Munich , the episode The Bang in the Closet was mostly filmed in the Ammerland district . The desert scenes of the episode The Long Way to Professor-Prokutatis-Krakedatus-Straße were filmed in Tunisia .

The series was recorded in German and later dubbed in Dutch. The Dutch dubbed version is now considered lost .

The song Away there! was re-introduced in the series, the opening sequences are also the title melody. The songs were published on a long-playing record of the same name and later used in the cartoon series Alfred J. Kwak . The series itself is available on DVD.

The series is the successor to the 4-part television series 21 van een kwartje, which was broadcast on NOT in 1975, starring Joris Franssen, Herman van Veen, Marlous Fluitsma and Fred Florusse. In 1980, the series Herman en de zes (Herman and the six) was broadcast as a further successor . The action in this series is not set in a windmill, but in a remote property in the forest. The ten artists from the windmill appear again in this series. The last successor is the series The Strange Story of the Clowns , produced in Austria in 1987 and broadcast on ORF 1 .

1 The long way to Professor-Prokutatis-Krakedatus-Straße Nov 13, 1977 The starting point for the adventures of the Dutch entertainer Herman van Veen is a windmill in the middle of high-rise buildings. In the main room there are pictures that have strange properties. For example, sand trickles out of a desert landscape. Much to the amazement of little Els, who got lost in the traffic chaos and seeks help in the mill. Through the picture, Els simply climbs into the desert ...
2 The frozen agent Nov 20, 1977 In the octagonal living room of the mill, which Herman has comfortably furnished with his wife Marlous and eight friends, hangs an old painting. It shows a worthy man with cherries and a violin. Herman has the gift of bringing images to life. So it is no problem for him to simply take his favorite instrument out of the painting. He runs out of the mill with it - and is suddenly followed by an agent. Herman doesn't take the matter seriously at first. He plays the violin, answers a little girl's violin, and his friends play along too. The agent thinks the tones are encrypted messages. He informs a dubious government and its general staff. And he fires an invisible missile at Herman!
3 The fearful ghost Nov 27, 1977 Herman sits alone in his mill and weeps. No wonder, because he has to cut onions. With a tear-shrouded gaze he looks at a painting depicting a romantic knight's castle. Listen - isn't a damsel crying for help? The knightly Herman jumps into the deep moat with a giant leap, swims through it and hurries into the bower. There he fights bravely against a fearsome “Iron Knight”. With success! Herman sings a minnie song to the freed beauty - and finds himself back in the mill. Was it all just spooky? A ghost floats in there. Because it is very small, it is afraid of people ...
4th Battle of the giants 0Dec. 4, 1977 On the street, Herman bumps into Rocky, a three-cheese high in leather gear and with a trendy bike. Rocky comes into the mill with two great protectors, Franky and Mausi, and challenges the residents to a great battle of strength. It starts with apple crushing, a table tennis match and ends peacefully - with a rock 'n' roll concert.
5 The bang in the closet Dec 11, 1977 Fellow mill resident Erik lives in the closet. It disappears into it with a cable. Meanwhile, Herman sees himself as a teacher in his imagination and cycles into the countryside with his students. They perform a ballet high on bicycles, and Herman, the penny farthing artist, ends up in the pond. Then a judo master teaches her to fly - and to fear. Back in the mill, there is another bang - out of the closet ...
6th When the mill learned to fly Dec 18, 1977 Today is shopping day and Herman is not at all happy that it's his turn. All sorts of strange things happen to him in the department store. Housewives who are crazy about shopping push him in the middle of a rummaging table. After that, Herman ends up in traffic and causes a mass collision. A horde of angry drivers follows Herman to the mill. This eventually flies away.
