The Herrenstall ( Danish : Herrestaldene ) is a historic alley in the old town of Flensburg , located in the old Ramsharde and leads from the main street of this district, Norderstraße  (Nørregade) , to the ship bridge  (Skibbroen) to the Flensburg harbor .

Location and history

The Herrenstall is a narrow old town street in the north of Flensburg. In an east-west direction, it drops from Norderstrasse (between houses 64 and 66) to the east and runs parallel to the many Flensburg merchants' yards to the ship bridge, number 36 of which forms the corner house to the Herrenstall. The street was first mentioned by name in 1582, but it is probably even older. The name possibly refers to the stables of the lords of the Duburg here near the harbor. The small alley was the shortest way from the harbor over the Schloßstraße  (Slotsgade) to Duburg Castle. Since the 17th century at the latest, the street was built on both sides, mostly with small eaves houses similar to the Oluf-Samson-Gang  (Oluf Samsons Gang) . Mainly petty bourgeoisie, artisans and workers lived here.

Today's appearance

Since the 1970s, the previously well-preserved manor stable has lost half of its historical development, but still forms one of the most beautiful little streets in the city in the eastern part. An entire area of historic buildings fell victim to the construction of the health department and a neighboring supermarket in 1974/75. In addition to the gabled houses on Norderstraße 52-64 with some impressive old merchants' courtyards, this also affected part of the Herrenstall. Houses on the north side of the alley were also demolished in order to gain parking space. The other buildings fell into disrepair. From the 1980s, however, a rethink began. The heavily dilapidated elongated half-timbered house No. 14 was renovated and converted into a restaurant. Houses 11-19 opposite have also won a lot since then. In the west of the street, only the back of the house at Norderstraße 66 remained. Unfortunately, the restaurant has been empty for a few years, as has the impressive corner building at Schiffbrücke 36, which was also lavishly renovated in the 1980s.

The rest of the Herrenstall is still at risk from new construction projects. As part of the redevelopment of the back courtyard of the Kayserhof , one of the buildings in the lower area of the Herrenstall, which up to now has blended into the old development without any real contrast, was partially demolished. In addition, the SPD has been planning a parking garage at the Herrenstall and its surroundings since 2014.
