The inner city of Flensburg consists of the parishes of St. Nikolai , St. Marien and the Gertrudenviertel . This district of Flensburg is often misunderstandably called the old town by the administration , although the known oldest part of the city ​​center , the Johannisviertel, is not included here. The more than one kilometer long pedestrian zone runs through the city center, stretching from Holm over Große Straße to Norderstraße .

history

The district to the Middle Ages

Around 1170, the parish of St. Marien was built on the west side of the Flensburg Fjord . The parish of St. Nikolai followed around 1200 . At the border of the two parishes, at the transition from Holm to Große Straße , a plaque set in the ground reminds of the historical center of the city, where the old town hall was located from 1445 to 1883 . In 1285 the Gertrudenviertel was added to the western part of the city. In the Middle Ages, this western part of the city, i.e. the Flensburg city center, was particularly well protected by the Flensburg city fortifications .

Trade in today's pedestrian zone

Nowadays, the Flensburg city center is characterized by brisk trade , many restaurants and cafés and numerous cultural institutions. Many of the shops and facilities have classic of Flensburg and quite straight-running shopping street settled that the Südermarkt north over the spar , the Great Road , the Nordermarkt and from there via the Norderstraße to Nordertor , the landmark of the town dates, with the busiest part is the spar. Norderstrasse

The Ochsenmarkt is a very small district center that is otherwise a bit similar to Twedter Plack in terms of its function and shape . Otherwise, the Citti-Park is very centrally located . It is located in the Friedenshügel district , between the Weiche district (Flensburg) , the suburbs Harrislee and Handewitt . In contrast to the Citti-Park , the Fördepark is located on the green meadow, on the edge of the commercial area in the southern part of the city . The Fördepark is located near the west and east bypasses and thus siphons off the purchasing power of arriving customers who come to Flensburg by car.

Since the Flensburg city center lies below the rising east and west banks of the fjord , it is also said nowadays when someone, for example, from Westliche Höhe or from Mürwik to the center of the city wants that person to be on their way "down to town".
