Building on the Rude with a large Flensburg coat of arms

The Südstadt ( Danish: Sydstaden ) Flensburg is located south of the city center . The church of the district is the Pauluskirche, which was built in the 1950s. The name Südstadt is obviously an analogy to the name of the Nordstadt district , where the St. Petrikirche is also located.

Districts of the southern city

The southern city consists of three city districts. Firstly Martinsberg with the Munketoftstift and the Bahnhofsviertel, secondly the urban district Rude and thirdly Peelwatt .

history

The area in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages , Rude , the oldest part of the Südstadt district, was outside the city walls and city gates of Flensburg . Rude was reached from the city via the Red Gate . There was a forest there, from which the city obtained wood, which is why the city was interested in this area. In 1398 Rude was incorporated.

The area in the 19th century

In the 1830s, the Backensmühle, an oil mill , which belonged to the mill type of Dutch windmills , was built in the area.

The area in the 20th century

At the beginning of the 20th century, the St. Pauli Inn was located at the intersection of Schleswiger Strasse and Eckernförder Landstrasse. In 1904 a municipal hospital was set up on Eckernförde Landstrasse. From the “Klinik-Süd”, which existed until 1991, the cholera house has been preserved to this day . The Bahnhofsviertel was built between the 1910s and the 1920s. With the construction of the railway loop, also known as the Nordschleswig loop , Rude and Peelwatt found themselves in an island location. On December 1, 1927, the Flensburg train station was opened. Carlisle Park was created with the station . Many of the buildings in the district were registered as cultural monuments in the Südstadt area . Also in the 20th century, the Flensburg fire brigade was located in the area of the station district. Diagonally across from the fire brigade, the city's new main post office was opened in 1981.

During the Second World War, the St. Pauli camp , in which Sinti and apparently forced laborers were interned, was also located on Eckernförder Straße . During an air raid on Flensburg in the night of 1–2 In October 1942, the baking mill, which was also called "Mühle St. Pauly", was destroyed by a crashed, burning bomber. After the Second World War, the St. Pauli camp was occupied with refugees. In the 1950s, the city tried to improve the living conditions of the refugees in order to be able to gradually dissolve the city's refugee camps. At some point during this time the warehouse was likely to have been closed. In 1955, the church council of St. Nikolai , who was responsible for the area of the southern part of the city, decided to build a separate church for the district, which resulted in the Paulus community. The foundation stone for the Pauluskirche in the street Tegelbarg was laid in 1959. The church was finally consecrated on October 16, 1960. The name St. Pauli is apparently still used today as a hallway term in the area of Schleswiger Straße / Eckernförder Landstraße, where the aforementioned inn used to be. The two bus stops in this area are called St. Pauli .

1960 to 1962 a new industrial area was set up south of the street Zur Bleiche and the Eckernförde Landstraße . In 1990 the South Clinic was closed. In 1996 the Förde Park was opened on the southern edge of the southern part of the city.

The Südstadt nowadays

An extensive redesign of the station district has been discussed in recent years. There are only detours by car from the Bahnhofsviertel to the rest of the southern part of the city. You can walk directly from the train station to Rude via the Serpentine sidewalk , said sidewalk leading uphill, which is why an elevator is being discussed to make things easier. The Fördepark is located in the south of the Südstadt .
