Hagop Agopjan

Hagop Agopjan ( Armenian Յակոբ Յակոբեան ; * 1951 as Harutiun Tokaschian in Mosul , Kingdom of Iraq ; † April 28, 1988 in Athens , Greece ) was an Armenian - Iraqi political activist and underground fighter. He was one of the founding members of the Armenian organization Asala and the leader until his death in 1988.

Life

He was born under the name Harutiun Tokaschian in the Iraqi city of Mosul. After taking his pseudonym Hagop Agopjan , he moved to Lebanon , where he joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine . In 1975 he founded the Asala in Beirut together with James Karnusian and Kevork Ajemian with the support of Palestinian groups .

After the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 , Hagop fled and built new bases in Syria ( Damascus ) and, under the name of Henri Titizian, in Athens . He broke with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which trained and supported Asala members, and allied with the PLO opponent Abu Nidal .

As the Asala leader, Hagop Agopjan used the pseudonyms Mihran Mihranian, Vahram Vahramian and Iran Irmian. The French police later stated that his real name was Bedros Havanassjan .

Agopjan was shot dead in front of his home in the Athens suburb of Paleo Faliro on April 28, 1988 at 4:30 am local time while he was waiting for a taxi to take him on a flight to Belgrade . He was accompanied by his sister-in-law, who was not injured. He had a South Yemeni diplomatic passport with the name Abdul Mohammed Kasim. His grave is in the city of Mosul. His parents Macardich and Siranoush Takoshian also lived in Mosul. The reasons for his murder are unknown.
