Engelsby ( Danish : Engelsby ) is a district of Flensburg , which is located east of the city and belongs to the fishing region.

The Engelsby district is located south of its eponymous nucleus near the Osbectal , which is now called Engelsby village . To the east of Engelsby there is also the largely natural area of Vogelsang , to which the neighbor Wees joins.

geography

The Engelsby district consists of the following urban areas: Windloch , the Musikerviertel , the Sternenviertel , Twedt , Trögelsby , Vogelsang , a small part of Blocksberg and Kauslund with the southern part of Wasserloos in the form of the street of the same name .

One nucleus, the old part of Engelsby's village, now called Engelsby-Dorf , now belongs to the Mürwik district . The second nucleus called Windloch, east of Engelsby-Dorf, belongs to Engelsby. South of Windloch, the so-called Musikerviertel continues the development of the district - a residential area with streets named after composers. To the east of the Musikerviertel lies the Star Quarter residential area with street names mainly from planets from our solar system. The Vogelsang area in the far east serves as a recreational area as well as for agriculture and forestry. The remaining areas of the district are located on Vogelsang: the old, small settlement Trögelsby, Twedt, Kauslund and Blocksberg. The city district name Engelsby-Süd is a rarely used, official name for the area south of Engelsby-Dorf, which consists of the Kirchentoft road area and a large part of the western musicians' quarter (up to Mozartstrasse ).

history

Beginnings

The name Engelsby is composed of the family name Engel and the ending -by . So it means "angel village" or "village of the angel".

The name of the village was first mentioned in 1445. In 1445 the Flensburg hospital received a farm in Engelsby from the city of Flensburg as a pledge. In 1551 the land in question was transferred to the monastery . The village of Windloch , which was first mentioned in 1697 and whose remains are in the Engelsby district , used to be right next to Engelsby . The former houses of Windloch can still be recognized today by the fact that they are no longer facing the street, and some old thatched roof houses are still there . In 1825 the two villages had few residents. There were 17 residents in Engelsby and 13 in Windloch. From 1886 the circular route coming from Flensburg stopped at the aforementioned Dorfkrug. The good connection made Engelsby more accessible. Richer Flensburg residents then began to build villas in what was then still a rural area. These villas in the Engelsby district can still be discovered today at the beginning of Engelsbyer Strasse up to Neuer Weg. In the period that followed, more and more was to be built south of the village of Engelsby. A "new Engelsby", today's Engelsby district, was created.

20th century

In 1910 Engelsby was incorporated and since then it has been greatly expanded. In 1953 the circular path was closed and a year later on March 26, 1954 the north road leading to Kappeln was opened, parallel to Engelsbyer Strasse . The Engelsbyer section of Nordstraße has since separated the old part of the village from the rest of the district and nowadays goes hand in hand with the four-lane Osttangente bypass , which was built between 1992 and 2006. In 1961 there were already 1400 people in the Engelsby district and the number of residents continued to grow. After additional living space had been created in the newly created musicians' quarter with high-rise buildings and apartment blocks, the number of residents rose to 4,300 in 1970. In May 1973 the community center, which consists of a small chapel and a multi-purpose hall, opened; Since then, services and other different events have been held here. In 1988 the Flensburg transmitter , which can be seen from afar, was built in the Vogelsang nature reserve , which belongs to the Engelsby district.

The part of town nowadays

In the musicians' quarter, high-rise buildings and row buildings from the 1970s can be found. The Musikerviertel was so named because the streets there bear the names of composers : Richard-Wagner- Strasse, Beethovenstrasse , Mozartstrasse and Brahmsstrasse . In contrast to the Musikerviertel, there are mainly single-family houses in the built-up eastern area of the district, the so-called Star District, which consists of a northern and southern area. The first houses in the Star Quarter were built in the 1970s, but most of them in the following decade. At the beginning of the 2000s, further residential developments were built near Kauslund.

There are supermarkets, discounters and also some retail stores at various points in the district . However, many shops that were located on Engelsbyer Straße, the former central street in the area, before the east bypass led to traffic relief, have now closed or have moved away. The environment has largely lost its previous central character. In addition to the aforementioned Engelsby shops, the Schottweg center with the famila hypermarket also covers the needs of many people. The department store is already in the Mürwik district , but directly behind Nordstrasse.

The Vogelsang area became a landscape protection area in 1976 and today, in addition to agriculture and forestry, serves as an important local recreational area for the city. Some buildings in the Engelsby district and Engelsby-Dorf (Alt-Engelsby) are considered to be cultural monuments , but they are not listed in Schleswig-Holstein's monuments book .
