Engelsby-Süd ( Danish Engelsby syd ) is a district in the Engelsby district of Flensburg . The area south of Engelsby-Dorf consists of the Kirchentoft street area and a large part of the western musicians' quarter up to Mozartstrasse .

background

The Kirchentoft area in the west of the city district has been attested by its name since 1768 and means "Kirchenfeld". This name is the oldest in the said municipality. To which church the name refers is obviously not passed down exactly. The area is not far north of the Adelbyer Johanniskirche , which could possibly be meant. Another possibility would be a reference to the ecclesiastical hospital , should such a connection exist. Until the incorporation in 1910, the Kirchentoft area, which extends to the Lautrupsbach in the west (with other areas of what is now the Engelsby-Süd district), still belonged to the municipality of Fruerlund . The same applies to the Jürgensbyer area on the directly opposite bank of the river, where the "Hotel Fruerlund" is still today, in the former Fruerlund station building of the Flensburg district railway , with the address Glücksburger Strasse 174. Incidentally, the bus stop at the hotel still bears the name Fruerlundmühle today , after the formerly not far away Fruerlundmühle. The name of the street area Kirchentoft was only explicitly set on December 8, 1955. The road connection Glücksburger Strasse and Engelsbyer Strasse, which marks the north of the city district, was given its two official street names in 1910. The streets of the music district belonging to the city district were only given their names in 1961/62. Beethovenstrasse and Franz-Schubert-Hof were named on April 5, 1961. Mozartstrasse, which is partly part of the city district, was officially named on the same day. Joseph-Haydn-Strasse followed on September 27, 1962. Richard-Wagner-Strasse, which is also partly part of the city district, was finally given its name on September 9, 1965.

The city district name Engelsby-Süd has obviously been in use since the early 2000s at the latest. How and when exactly the name of the city district came about is unclear. A historical, identity-forming structure in the city district area is obviously hardly recognizable. The name is mostly used in the official area. As already mentioned, the southern area, which at the beginning of the 20th century still belonged to the rural municipality of Fruerlund, now roughly corresponds to the municipality of Engelsby-Süd. The naming is possibly based on this fact. A small central area in the city district is now at the intersection of the streets Kirchentoft, Beethovenstraße and Richard-Wagner-Straße ( Lage ), where originally a Spar store was located and today you can find a snack bar and an ice cream parlor .
