The star district in Flensburg - Engelsby is an urban area that was incorporated with Twedt in 1910 and was not built on until the 1970s. Much of the streets in the neighborhood are named after planets in the solar system .

background

The Merkurstraße was possibly created in parts already in the 1960s. In the 1970s, the city of Flensburg finally planned a new residential area east of Engelsby on the edge of Vogelsang , near Twedt , on formerly agricultural land, which was to be given the name Star District. On May 24, 1973, the streets in the newly created northern star district ( Lage ) officially got their names, i.e. Orion Street , Martian Way , Jupiter Way and Uranus Way . This was followed by the official naming of the streets of the southern Star Quarter ( Lage ) on July 5, 1979 , i.e. the Arc of Venus , the Arc of Sirius and the Arc of Saturn . The first houses in the northern Sternenviertel were thus apparently built in the early 1970s and those in the southern Sternenviertel at the end of the 1970s. Most of the houses in the residential area evidently did not come into existence until the 1980s. In contrast to the musicians' quarter in the Engelsby district to the west , mainly single-family houses were built in the star district, the eastern part of the district.

Almost all of the streets in the neighborhood were named after planets . The real immediate neighborhood of the planets in space was not taken into account when arranging the streets. The Pluto as well as the Neptune but received no roads. The street name “Arch of Neptune” was probably considered, but was ultimately not given. Why it was not forgiven is unclear. On the Nordermarkt , in the center of Flensburg, there is a Neptune fountain and not far from it is a backyard called “Neptunhof” (cf. Kaufmannshaus Hansen ). The name "Arch of Neptune" can be found every now and then in street directories of the city without an exact position in the Engelsby district being determined.

Many families with children settled in the star district, which gained a positive image. In the star district, several playgrounds were gradually created. In the northern star district there is a single playground ( location ) on the eastern edge of the district . In the southern star district there are further playgrounds, the Venusbogen playground ( Lage ), the Siriusbogen playground ( Lage ) and a playground at Saturnborgen ( Lage ). The Holländerhof, a facility of the Diakonie-Hilfswerk Schleswig-Holstein, which operates workshops and homes for people with disabilities in Flensburg. In addition, built and opened in 1998 in Merkurstrasse 53 the “home in the star district” for 32 residents ( location ). At the beginning of the 2000s, construction activities shifted further to the neighboring, northeastern, on Nordstrasse , Kauslund . At the end of 2011, the city of Flensburg decided to build another thirty new single-family houses on a former agricultural area and green space between the new development area Kauslund-Osterfeld and the northeastern star district. Near-natural green spaces have been preserved to this day and serve as a connection between the star district and the Blocksberg area . The district is supplied with local supplies by a supermarket in Trögelsbyer Weg 79 ( Lage ) and the Schottweg center in the neighboring Mürwiker district of Wasserloos . The star district can now be reached via public transport using bus lines 10 and 11, which continue from the direction of Flensburg-Weiche , coming via the Flensburg city center , to Twedter Plack in Flensburg-Mürwik .
