Ramsharde

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nordertor once marked the city limits and thus represents the northernmost part of Gertrudenviertel. It was formerly also called "Ramsharder Tor".

The Ramsharde ( Danish Ramsherred ), formerly also called St. Gertrud , was the northern part of Flensburg's old town and one of the four original settlement centers of the city. Ramsharde thus included the area from Nordertor to Neue Straße north of the Marienkirche . Today's Ramsharde is elsewhere, namely much further north in Flensburg.

The original Ramsharde (Gertrudenviertel)

The location of the old St. Gertrud chapel, which at times also served as the Duburg castle chapel .

In 1285 the Ramsharde area came to the city. The name Ramsharde translates literally into the modern written language: Ramsch - Harde and thus describes a less affluent urban area. There are corresponding names, for example, in Flensburg's northern neighboring city Aabenraa (there also the northern part of the old town) and in Odense . In contrast to the adjoining core settlements around St. Marien and St. Nikolai to the south , the Ramsharde had a suburban character for a long time and was only enclosed with palisades. The way from and to the north to the city led through the Ramsharde, as well as from and to Duburg, which protects the city . Although the district lost its own church of St. Gertrud before the Reformation , which was probably only a chapel dependent on St. Mary anyway, more and more merchants settled on the harbor side from the 16th century. Some of the typical merchants' courtyards have been preserved to this day. The Oluf-Samson-Gang , probably the most famous street in the city , emerged from one of these in the early 17th century . The port lanes parallel to the north, Norderfischerstraße and Herrenstall, are probably even older . In 1596 the district was expanded to the north to today's Nordertor. Only from 1796 was it allowed to build on the town field, so that the new town was built immediately north of the Ramsharde .

In the old Ramsharde you can still see the old town character. It is true that some of the smaller gabled houses on the west side of Norderstrasse were replaced by buildings typical of the time during the founding period . There were even bigger interventions between 1959 and 1974, when the Dansk Centralbibliotek for Sydslesvig was built in the central area of Norderstrasse , then a supermarket and the health department opposite were built, with numerous old gabled houses and courtyards being destroyed. However, plans for the complete demolition of the district and the car-friendly expansion of Norderstrasse were not implemented. Instead, a rethink set in, and major parts of the old building were refurbished until the 1990s, revitalizing the district, although Norderstrasse lost a considerable part of its traditional business life since the 1990s. Since the section of the Flensburg main road leading through the Ramsharde was (and is) called Norderstrasse , the historical name was gradually forgotten as the city grew beyond its old borders. In addition, a completely different area in Flensburg is called Ramsharde nowadays. Similar to the name Ramsharde, the name St. Gertrud fared. In the west of Ramsharde in the Westliche Höhe district , a new parish called St. Gertrud was founded in the 1950s . Nowadays, the Flensburg city administration assigns the old Gertrudenviertel under the district name Nordertor to the old town ( Flensburg city center ).

Today's Ramsharde (Ramsharder Feld)

The name Ramsharde is hardly known nowadays for the original Ramsharde. Since the 1920s, a street further north has also been named Ramsharde , and on newer maps the urban area of Ramsharde is located below this street and thus much further north . The street in question was originally a path on the part of the city field belonging to the old Ramsharde, which was called Ramsharder Feld. Therefore, the TTC Ramsharde is also an association of the Nordstadt district and the Klues district . Nowadays, the term Ramsharde in Flensburg is generally used to mean the area near the Katharinenhof, which belongs to the Klues district and represents large parts of the (Harrisleer) Kreuz district. The Ramsharde School is also in this area. The former border barracks are also located in the Ramsharder area .
