The Church of St. Gertrud is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Westliche Höhe district of the city of Flensburg in Schleswig-Holstein . The St. Gertrud Church is one of the city's cultural monuments .

Today's parish also gives its name to the St. Gertrud district, which includes the area between Marienhölzungweg, Nerongsallee, Westerallee and the western bypass. The city district is not to be confused with the Gertrudenviertel on Norderstrasse , where the St. Gertrud Chapel stood in the Middle Ages .

background

In 1290 the St. Gertrud Chapel was built in downtown Flensburg , which was dedicated to Gertrud von Nivelles . The Gertrudenholz belonged to the parish. The beginnings of this logging were between Eckenerstraße and Waldstraße and extended to Harrislee . Remains of the grain timbering form the northern part of today's Marienhölzung . In the 15th century, the Gertruden Chapel was affected in the fighting for the Duburg . In 1571 the dilapidated chapel was finally demolished. The Gertrudenviertel was parish to St. Marien . The memory of Gertrud wood preserved the near Marienhölzungsweg located Gertrudenstraße , officially received its name on 30 September 1898th

In the years 1951 to 1954, the St. Marien parish built the brick church St. Gertrud on the corner of Hermann-Löns-Weg / Marienhölzungsweg No. 51 . The name St. Gertrud was chosen because of its location near the former Gertrudenholz. The building, which was designed by the architect Georg Rieve , consists of an elongated church hall with an entrance hall in front of which an outside staircase leads. A second wing was added to the aforementioned church hall on the west side so that the building complex was given an L-shape. The parish hall is located in this south-facing wing. Furthermore, a kindergarten was set up on the ground floor of the brick complex . A youth center was set up in the Hochparterreberreich. Young people from refugee families in the Flensburg area, who often did not get an apprenticeship in the villages, should be provided with accommodation in the youth center during their apprenticeship in the city. The kindergarten started operations in 1953 with two groups for 60 children. The church was consecrated on November 27, 1954 by the bishop of Schleswig Reinhard Wester .

In 1965 St. Gertrud became an independent parish with around 5,000 parish members. The dormitory rooms of the youth center have not been occupied since 1967. The attached St. Gertrud Evangelical Day Care Center has been preserved to this day. In 2001, barrier-free access was designed on the north side by the Flensburg architects Lorenzen. In 2009/10 St. Gertrud was renovated for almost half a million euros. The ridge turret, which originally had only one bell, was renovated and fixed as a fixed bell tower with two bells. The artist Uwe Appold was brought in to renovate the interior . In 2013 the St. Gertrud Church received a new organ with eleven stops by the organ builder Kurt Quathamer from Bordesholm . The cost of the new organ in the amount of 150,000 euros was almost entirely covered by donations. In 2015 the parish of St. Gertrud celebrated its 50th anniversary as an independent parish.
