The Marienhölzung ( Danish : Frueskov ; Petuh : Holzung ) in the west of the city of Flensburg is a 200 hectare forest that is designated as a landscape protection area.

geography

The Marienhölzung lies on a compression moraine from the last glaciation and reaches its highest point at approx. 64 m, the highest point in the city. The forest is the remainder of a large forest area that stretched from the Flensburg Fjord to the marshland in the Middle Ages . The Marienau , a stream that flows into the Flensburg Fjord, flows through the forest .

Deciduous tree species such as beech and oak originally occur in Marienholzung , but in recent decades fast-growing conifer species have been planted, in particular spruce , sitka spruce and Japanese larch . Next to the forest restaurant there is a large oak tree, which is estimated to be 200 to 250 years old. The pedunculate oak was entered under the number 32 in the natural monument book of the city of Flensburg.

history

Eddeboe and Franz Böckmann

Of historical interest is also the Eddeboe , a medieval castle , which has its headquarters in the Marienhölzung. The background is supposed to be a legendary knight around 1200. In addition to this legendary tradition, another historical event should be mentioned in which the forest played a major role: When the Swedes occupied Flensburg in the 18th century and the population suffered badly, the Flensburg citizen Franz Böckmann went to Rendsburg , where he was still Danish troops were there and asked for some drummers and pipers. With these he went to the Marienhölzung. There he hid with them and gathered other people from the city around him, who he put into Danish soldiers' uniforms. On a cold winter night, he distributed his men around the city, but still with the main focus on the Marienholzung. At his signal, his drummers began to drum loudly, his pipers to whistle loudly and his men to march clearly visible. Fearing that the whole Danish army would be back, the Swedes quickly left the city through the Red Gate . But since the streets were icy, many fell while fleeing, but Flensburg was liberated. This event obviously bears a resemblance to Gideon's fight against the Midianites described in the Bible, as well as certain parallels to the well-known legend of Robin Hood . This well-known incident from Böckmann's life has already been classified as a legend, but can also be found in historical accounts. But there is no doubt that Franz Böckmann made a significant contribution to the liberation of Flensburg, even if some details of his life are of a fabulous nature.

20th and 21st centuries

In 1909 the parish council of St. Marien gave the Marienhölzung, which also includes the Gertrudenhölzung, to the city of Flensburg.

Marienhölzung, which is primarily intended for local recreation , has always been a popular excursion destination for Flensburg residents, especially on weekends and public holidays . Characteristic for the city forest is a well-developed network of paths, which covers approx. 22 km, with plenty of seating and some weather protection shelters. The forest roads, some of which have their own names, have been gradually renovated over the past few years. There are also bridle paths.

The Marienhölzung inn is also located in the Marienhölzung . The economy in question came into being in the 18th century. The current building of the historic forest restaurant was erected in 1825/26. Today there is also a children's playground there. Today the inn belongs to the Katharinenhospiz , which intends to use the inn for the children and youth hospice service in the next few years.

An educational forest trail laid out in 1990 was renovated in 2004 and provides information about the forest and its ecological relationships. The Marienhölzung also houses a new balance course built in 2003 and a game fence with wild boar and fallow deer .

Management

A forester and two foresters are responsible for the management . In an agenda, the principles of the management form for the Flensburg city forests, and thus also for the Marienhölzung, were laid down. Primarily, the principle of near-natural silviculture is used here , the goal of which is permanent forest . Only as much wood is felled as will grow back. At the same time, the interests of the population in using the forest as a recreational area are taken into account . According to the Schleswig-Holstein Forest Act, Marienhölzung is a designated recreational forest .

Since January 1, 2008, Marienhölzung and the rest of the forest areas in Flensburg have been owned by the Technical Operations Center (TBZ), i.e. no longer directly owned by the City of Flensburg.

Development

In the forest is the Marienhölzung forester's yard with the two Flensburg forest houses, the depot of the city forester's office and the Flensburger Waldjugend . On Sängerstein choirs and music groups meet to make music together under the stars. Occasionally, concerts and church services are held in the forest restaurant. In a designated part of the forest, dogs are allowed to walk without being on a leash. (Dog free run)

Black railroad

Behind the Wolfsmoor, a marshy lake on the surface of which water lilies can be discovered and which is used for ice skating in winter, there is a railway line to Denmark, which is called the Black Railway in Petu language . This is the Fredericia – Flensburg railway line .

White gate

The White Gate was the main portal to the Marienhöholzung between 1851 and 1962. In 1962 the forest was cut up by the construction of the B 200 , and from then on the White Gate was only the entrance to a very small and now isolated part of the forest, while the new path ( Grüner Weg ) was led parallel over a new bridge. The gate fell into disrepair over the years, until in 2007 the Flensburg Beautification Association succeeded in restoring the historic gate system with the help of donations from the citizens of Flensburg.
