The term Shoefiti (from English shoe - shoe and graffiti - graffiti ) names a phenomenon that can be observed worldwide within street art , that pairs of shoes are tied together and thrown over branches, lines, cables or the like.

Emergence

There are very different approaches to explaining how Shoefiti came about. The trend is said to come from Scotland and the United States. It has long been the custom of men in Scotland to hang their shoes in the window as soon as they are no longer virgins. In the Bronx neighborhood of New York , dangling shoes are said to have marked a drug area and street gangs are said to have left shoes in places where one of their members was killed.

In the cult film Wag the Dog (1997) by Barry Levinson, the lead actor Brean created a sympathy rally for the allegedly lost US soldier William Schumann "Old Shoe" by throwing his shoes into a tree top. This becomes the output signal for a citizens' movement that picks up on the signal.

This phenomenon can also be observed in Germany. In Norderstraße in Flensburg , where several lines are stretched across the street, the phenomenon has been observed since around 2005. Here the phenomenon is said to have arisen because the customers of a skater shop left their old shoes after buying new sneakers and the shopkeeper threw them over the leashes. His neighbor from the St. Pauli fan shop is said to have joined soon afterwards. The shoes on Norderstrasse became a sight of the city and a popular photo opportunity.

Meanwhile, Berlin has also become a stronghold of this trend.
