Parklet in San Francisco

A parklet is a piece of street furniture on a former parking lot that provides people with more public space by means of structures . Wood is usually used as building material, e.g. B. Pallets .

Description and brief history

A parklet mainly offers seating; Elements such as plants, lighting, rain protection or bicycle parking facilities increase the quality of stay. In inner cities it offers z. B. a possibility to rest while shopping. It can also serve as a meeting point for local residents. Since it does not have a solid foundation, a parklet can be manufactured inexpensively and quickly assembled and dismantled.

The first parklet was set up in 2013 in San Francisco . Other cities in the United States followed . There are now parklets in major cities around the world.

Situation in Germany

Parklets in the Bergmann Street in Berlin-Kreuzberg cleared, in autumn 2019 and boulders replaced
  • In Germany, the first parklet was set up in Stuttgart in 2015. As a research project by students, additional parklets were created in 2016. In 2017, rules for approval were drawn up.
  • There has been a parklet test zone in Berlin since 2016: the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district had the first parklets set up in the trendy Bergmannstrasse district , around four residential parking spaces were eliminated for each. The action cost 1.6 million euros. The citizens were not included, so there are critics and supporters: The promotion of the quality of stay and the improvement of communication have not yet been determined, on the other hand the parklets form meeting points for drinkers and noisy tourist groups, especially in the evening and night. Garbage disposal has already turned out to be a problem.
There were a total of 17 parklets along Bergmannstrasse in May 2019. Two street furniture that was first erected (in front of houses 11 and 99) had to be dismantled since they had become unusable due to the weather and vandalism ; they are in a storage area of the district office. The design office TAU and the landscape architect Birgit Hammer designed the first Berlin parklets, which consisted of simple planed and lacquered boards. Larger quantities of these resting platforms were not available at short notice, so that the Oslo company Vestre was commissioned with the further delivery and installation of the resting platforms. They consist of Scandinavian pine wood and yellow to orange painted metal sheets and are laterally demarcated by means of square green areas as raised beds. The manufacturer of the Parklet 2.0 walkway extensions , which have already been installed in Oslo, among others, produces them based on designs by the designers Johan Verde, Hong-Ngo Andal and Studio Oslo Landskapsarkitekter . Vestre names the advantages: "an extensive range of equipment elements, a 15-year guarantee period and practical testing in several European countries".
According to the assessment of the district administration, the 17 parklets at this point have not proven themselves, which is why building city councilor Florian Schmidt had stonelets laid on the areas . These huge boulders, which originate from construction work in the Kreuzberg district, are intended to "secure open spaces against incorrect parking until (new) uses are defined". Again there is criticism because the participation process for the redesign of the street is disrupted.
  • In Flensburg , three parklets were built for the first time in 2018, and they were again made available for use in 2019.
  • In Munich in 2018 a pilot project to Parklets began in the city, they should expand, especially at first scarce seating gastronomy. Further installation options in the Westend and Giesing districts are under discussion.
  • The Rostock local group of the environmental protection organization Greenpeace Germany is providing Rostock's first parklet in Waldemarstraße from May to October 2019.
