Porter is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1,498 inhabitants in 816 households on an area of ​​85.13 km².

Geographical location

Porter is located in southwest Oxford County and is bordered by York County to the south and Carroll County , New Hampshire to the west. The largest lakes in the Town area are the centrally located Colcord Pond and Bickford Pond . Other lakes are Mine Pond and Plaine Pond in the southwest, and Black Lake and Spectacle Ponds in the southeast . Stanley Pond is on the border with Hiram . The Ossipee River flows east through the south of the town. It forms the border with the adjacent York County to the south. Other smaller rivers run through the area. The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point is the 487 m high Whales Back on the border with New Hampshire in the northwest of Porter.

history

The Grant Porter was in September 1795 Dr. Aaron Porter with another, for the amount of £ 564. The terms of the grant included the provision of a piece of land for a school, another piece of land for the first priest to settle, and a piece of land for his maintenance. In addition, 100 acres (40.5 hectares ) were to be given to each settler who settled before January 1, 1784 . At that point there were four settlers who did. More settlers came to Porter in 1787 and 1791. Most of them were former soldiers who had served during the revolution. Porter belonged to the territory of the Pigwacket , a tribe of the Abenaki . The area that was known as Porterfield Plantation before the town was organized on February 20, 1807, extended to Fryeburg. When it was organized in 1807, about two-fifths of the area was given to Brownfield.

Additional areas were given to Brownfield in 1831, 1832 and 1855.

The Maine State Route 25 runs east to west through the south part of the Town parallel to Ossipee River. From it branches off in a central height in a southerly direction from the Maine State Route 160 to Parsonsfield, which connects the town with Brownfield in the east of the town in a northerly direction along the eastern border with Hiram.

Public facilities

Porter does not have its own hospital or medical facility. The closest facilities are in Fryeburg, Ossipee and North Conway, New Hampshire.

The Kezar Falls Library in neighboring Parsonsfield in York County is also available to residents of the Town Porter.
