The fertile area on the Androscoggin River was initially named Sudbury Canada in honor of the first settlers who came from Sudbury , Massachusetts and who received the grant. Settlement started in 1774.

There were only ten families left in Sudbury Canada during the American Revolutionary War . However, after the war ended, more families from Massachusetts and New Hampshire moved to Sudbury Canada, and in 1796 the name was changed to Bethel with the foundation . The first settlers operated farms and timber industry. A number of settlements emerged on the river.
