history

The early history of Sebago is linked to that of Baldwin, who was originally called Flintstone. The area was granted in 1774 by the Massachusetts General Cour to survivors of Captain John Flint's company of Concord, Massachusetts. Baldwin became a town in 1802 and named after an early settler Loammi Baldwin. The area was divided in 1826, the northern part became the Town of Sebago, around 404.7 hectares (1000 acres ) were added from Denmark in 1830 and 161.8 hectares (400 acres) from Baldwin. In 1834, Sebago ceded 4,700 acres to Naples.

Lumberjacks and forest workers were the area's first residents, but they left the area when most of the pine trees were felled. The municipality is very uneven and rocky. Planting fields in this area was a difficult task, but the soil is good and has good harvests. The construction and maintenance of roads in the hilly terrain and bridges over sometimes very fast flowing rivers was a difficult task for which the citizens had to pay high taxes.

Water-powered mills were used to produce timber, boots, and shoes. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal was built in 1832 to facilitate trade with Portland . In 1870 the Portland and Ogdensburg Railway was built, which also brought day trippers to Sebago Lake and Sebago. Sebago is now an excursion area.
