history
The town was founded as the 7th Town in the Province of Maine on November 12, 1718. It was named after the port of the same name in Falmouth in England. Originally the town reached from the Spurwink River to North Yarmouth and eight miles into the hinterland. This area included the present-day towns of Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, Westbrook, Decring and Portland. Thus the history of Falmouth is closely linked to the history of Portland.
A first settlement in Falmouth took place in 1632 in Falmouth Foreside by Arthur Mackworth. He received a grant for 202 hectares (500 ac ) from Ferdinando Gorges . Mackworth was a very respected settler from the very beginning who worked for many years in the administration of the area. The island across from his house has since borne his name, Mackworth Island, and is connected to the mainland by a causeway.
The eastern side of the Presumpscot Basin is of great historical importance. The Presumpscot River settlements were among the first to be attacked. Thomas Wakely's family, consisting of nine people who settled far away from others, was executed with great brutality. Only a girl of fourteen could escape the massacre. She was captured. The Old Neck fortress and settlement in Portland was destroyed by the Indians in 1690 and in 1698 the fort and trading house were built on this site to accommodate the Indians on the basis of the latest treaties. The place was called New Casco, to distinguish it from the place where Fort Loyal had stood, which was now called Old Casco.
In 1703, Governor Joseph Dudley held a conference with the Indians. Well-armed and brightly painted, a large number of warriors from the various tribes of Maine appeared at the conference. The Arosaguntacook came with over 250 warriors in 65 canoes. The chiefs declared peace and the warriors celebrated it in a demonstrative manner. But within two months all settlements were attacked. During this war , New Casco was a defense center for the settlements on Casco Bay. An attack was carried out by 500 French and Indians and it was only possible to force the Indians to retreat through the timely arrival of an armed ship in the province. In 1716, the fortress was demolished on behalf of the Massachusetts governor to save the cost of maintaining a garrison on the site.
In 1735 the residents of New Casco filed a petition in favor of a preacher and another in 1752 to establish an independent congregation. The parish was founded in December 1753 and the church in 1754.
In Falmouth there were brickworks in several places, meal and flour was ground in West Falmouth and New Casco, carriages, boots, shoes and tin goods were produced at Presumpscot Falls. Hubs, spokes, carriages, bricks and wood in West Falmouth.
In 1996 a message in a bottle reached Falmouth, which was thrown into victory at Hennef in 1993 . As the most impossible message in a bottle , it received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 1998 .
