history

Frye Island was part of the area that was granted as a grant to Capitain Humphrey Hobbs and Moses Pearson and their men in 1750 for their services in the siege of Louisburg. Frye Island, named after Captain Joseph Frye, became an independent town on July 1, 1998.

Fry's Leap 1905

A well-known legend is the story of Captain Frye and his escape from captivity by the Indians. After he was captured, Captain Frye came upon a large rock now known as Frye's Leap. There was no way out of there, only by jumping in the water and swimming through the channel to Frye Island could he save his life. Today there are always people who want to recreate this jump and escape, but this is dangerous and forbidden.

Frye Island is mostly forested and approximately 404.68 hectares (1000 acres ) in size. There are about 35 km of dirt roads. The maximum speed is 32 km / h (20 mph). Many of the homes are built on the water with views of Sebago Lake.
