The creeping beautiful cushion ( Callisia repens ) is a species from the commelina family (Commelinaceae). This species is native to Central and South America.

features

The perennial plant forms creeping mats, the flowering shoots are ascending. The fleshy leaves become smaller towards the tip of the shoot. The leaf blade is oval to lanceolate, one to 3.5 centimeters long and 0.6 to one centimeter wide. In the distal leaves, the spreads are narrower than the open, spreading leaf sheaths .

The inflorescences sit in the axils of the distal leaves of the flowering shoots and consist of paired cymes. The flowers are hermaphrodite and odorless. The bracts are inconspicuous, white, lanceolate and three to six millimeters long. There are zero to six stamens with smooth filaments. The ovary is twofold and has a brush-shaped scar . Capsule fruits with seeds one millimeter in size develop .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.

distribution

The species is native to America from the southern United States (Texas, Florida) over the West Indies to Argentina and grows in shady, rocky or gravel places. It is naturalized in Hong Kong and grows on rooftops.

use

The species is occasionally used as a pot and hanging plant. It is sold under the registered brand name Golliwoog® as feed for rodents, birds, reptiles and other exotic animals . The high vitamin and magnesium content of the plants is used here.
