Boothbay is located in southwest Lincoln County on a peninsula on Linekin Bay in the Atlantic Ocean . Several islands also belong to the area of ​​the town. history

Boothbay was initially known as part of Cape Newagen . The area is said to have been inhabited since 1630. In the area of ​​Boothbay Harbor, George Weymouth had vegetables planted on his expedition in 1605. Henry Curtis bought the right to settle in 1666 from the Sachem Robinchaud. In King William's War , however, the settlement was destroyed by the Indians. The area was repopulated from 1730 by David Dunbar, the lieutenant governor of the New Hampshire Colony . He named the area Townsend. The area was organized as Townsend on November 3, 1764. The name was changed to Boothbay, after Old Boothbay in Lincolnshire , in 1842 .

Until 1842 Southport belonged to the Boothbay area and Boothbay Harbor was organized as an independent town in 1889.
