history

Due to its location at the mouth of the Damariscotta River in the Atlantic Ocean, the area to which South Bristol also belongs was used intensively. First by Native Americans and from the 16th century European explorers reached the area and from the late 16th and early 17th centuries came the first settlers who were active as farmers, fishermen and traders.

The peninsula was settled in the 1730s by Scottish-Irish families who were brought to the area by Colonel David Dunbar. Their settlements were Walpole on the Damariscotta River, Harrington on Johns Bay and Pemaquid Village. They were mostly farmers and forest workers, built farmsteads, and exported wood, stones, bricks and hay. After the end of the Indian Wars, the population grew.

The town of Bristol, to which South Bristol also belonged at the time, was in 1765 one of the oldest towns in the province of Maine, which was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay . Meetinghouses were built in 1772 at Walpole, Harrington and Round Pond for church services and the gatherings of the towns. The houses in Walpole and Harrington still exist today and have been listed. They are used for special occasions.

The British-American War of 1812 destroyed many commercial and economic structures in the area and the population had to find new sources of income. Fishing, especially deep-sea fishing, gained in importance and boat building became a further economic factor. There were several small fishing fleets in South Bristol at the time and dried fish was exported.

With the beginning of the 20th century tourism found its way into the area. A first summer colony emerged on Inner Heron Island, and summer visitors came to Christmas Cove, South Bristol and Clarks Cove in the 1890s. The invention of the automobile made the area more accessible, but the residents were dissatisfied with the administration in Bristol. Roads, bridges and sidewalks in South Bristol were not well maintained. The schools also felt the residents were worse off than in Bristol. After submissions from the residents to the state, the town of South Bristol was organized as an independent town on March 26, 1915.
