The 2017 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ecuador took place on February 19, 2017 and the second round of the presidential elections on April 2, 2017.
Election result
The ruling Movimiento PAÍS (AP) retained its majority, but its number of seats fell from 100 to 74 in the 137-member National Assembly . The AP consists of the Patria Altiva i Soberana, German Upright and Sovereign Fatherland (PAIS) of the outgoing President Rafael Correa and his allies. The Creando Oportunidades (CREO), which had entered into an alliance with SUMA, were able to triple their joint seat share to 34 mandates. The elections brought about a major change in the plenary: only 31 members of the previous legislature were re-elected.
During the election campaign, the major parties focused on health care, education, job creation, social security, tourism and tax reform.
No candidate was elected in the first round of the presidential election, which took place in parallel with the parliamentary elections. In the runoff election on April 2, 2017 between the former Vice President Lenín Moreno (PAIS) and the former Minister of Economic Affairs Guillermo Lasso (CREO), Moreno was elected as the new President with 51.16% of the vote. He succeeded Rafael Correa , who had ruled since 2007.
