The National Assembly ( Asamblea Nacional ) is the parliament of the Republic of Ecuador and has replaced the National Congress (Congreso Nacional) since the constitution of 2008 . It is elected through a national (15 MPs) and provincial lists (2 MPs each), whereby the emigrants can also vote according to lists (USA and Canada; Latin America; Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania). Voting is compulsory , from which only emigrants and members of the military are exempt.

Composition of the National Assembly after the 2013 elections

The first elections to the National Assembly took place on April 26, 2009 ; the first National Assembly met on July 31, 2009. The strongest parliamentary group in the 124-member parliament, with 59 members, is the ruling party Alianza PAÍS , which is headed by Fernando Cordero.

In the parliamentary elections in 2013 and 2017 , the Alianza PAÍS remained the strongest parliamentary group.

Seat in the Palacio Legislativo de Ecuador in Quito

The National Assembly of Ecuador has its seat in the capital Quito , in the Palacio Legislativo de Ecuador . The National Congress of Ecuador met there beforehand . The building was constructed in the International Style in the 1960s . There is a frieze by Luis Mideros on the facade of the building and a controversial mural by Oswaldo Guayasamín in the plenary chamber .

The building was damaged in a fire in 2003. The building complex was renovated during the Constituent Assembly of Ecuador in 2007/08.
