Plurinational Legislative Assembly of Bolivia

The Plurinational Legislative Assembly (Spanish Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional ) is the parliament of Bolivia . It is based in La Paz , which is also the seat of government . The National Congress is a bicameral parliament consisting of a House of Representatives ( Cámara de Diputados ) and a Senate ( Cámara de Senadores ). The Senate has 36 members, four representatives for each department . They are elected through party lists. The House of Representatives has 130 members, one of whom is elected through a direct mandate in the 68 electoral districts . The remaining 62 MPs are elected from national party lists through proportional representation.

The parliament got its current name with the constitution of 2009 as part of the transformation of Bolivia into a "plurinational state". Previously it was called the National Congress (Spanish Congreso Nacional ).

The two chambers of the assembly meet in the Palacio Legislativo in Plaza Murillo , the main square of La Paz opposite the government palace .

Before the Palacio Legislativo was used as the seat of the Congress, the building housed a monastery and a university.
