The National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis consists of elected members, the representatives (English. Representatives ), and appointed members, the senators.

The Caribbean Island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has been independent since 1983, but the British Queen Elizabeth II remains the head of state and the state is in the Commonwealth Realm .

At present, 8 representatives are elected on St. Kitts and 3 on Nevis according to the majority vote in single-constituencies. The Senators (at least 3, at most two-thirds of the number of representatives) are from the Governor-General appointed, namely one-third to the proposal of opposition leader ( Leader of the Opposition ) and two-thirds to the proposal of the Prime Minister. In addition, the Attorney General ( Attorney General ), if it already is not Senator or Representative, Senator ex officio .

The National Assembly elects a President ( Speaker ) - since April 24, 2008 this is Curtis Martin - and a Vice President ( Deputy Speaker ) - currently Richard Oliver Skerritt. If someone is elected President who is not a member of the National Assembly, the number of members increases by one more.

Election results

The last election took place on February 16, 2015. The SKNLP , which had been ruling for 20 years, lost 2 seats and was replaced by a coalition of PAM , CCM and PLP . Since then, the PLP has provided the Prime Minister with Timothy Harris .
