Senate (Belize)

The Senate in Belize , Central America , and the House of Representatives form the Belizean National Assembly .

The Senate in Belize has twelve Senate members and a Senate President and can be compared to the House of Lords in Great Britain . Each member of the Senate is appointed by the Governor General , whereby the following rules apply:

  • Six Senate members are appointed on the recommendation of the Prime Minister
  • Three members of the Senate are appointed on the recommendation of the opposition leader
  • A member of the Senate is as recommended by the Council of Churches ( Belize Council of Churches and Evangelical Association of Churches appointed)
  • A member of the Senate is appointed on the recommendation of the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Industry
  • A Senate member is appointed on the recommendation of the union and the civil society committee

The task of the Senate is to ratify all treaties of the Belizean government, as well as to appoint the ambassadors , the president and the judges of the Supreme Court, the judges of the appellate court and others.
