Lisa Shoman

Lisa M. Shoman (* 1964 ) is a diplomat and politician from Belize .

biography

After attending elementary and secondary school in Belize, she studied law at the University of the West Indies in Mona and at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica . In October 1988, she was admitted as a lawyer and became the Kronanwältin ( Crown Counsel appointed) in the office of the Director of Public accusations before an activity as a lawyer in a one year law firm began. As such, she was also elected the first female chairman of the Belize Bar Association in 1996. She later served as CEO of Belize Telecommunications Limited from 1998 to 2000 .

Shoman was 2000 ambassador in the United States and was both as Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS) accredited .

Subsequently, she was appointed Foreign Minister by Prime Minister Said Musa on June 5, 2007 , and held this position until the end of Musa's term on February 8, 2008.

At the same time, she was appointed a member of the Senate in 2008. In 2009 she was also nominated for the Senate by opposition leader John Briceño . In the Senate, she campaigned for civil rights and is an opponent of telephone surveillance to combat crime .

In December 2009 she was also appointed by the President of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Dr. Abdulai Conteh, with the rank of Senior Counsel .
