The Kethuda Mosque was a mosque in the old town center of Eger (Hungary) . The almost 40 m high minaret of this mosque has survived today, besides the minaret of the Hamza Bey mosque in Érd and the minaret of Pécs, one of only three in Hungary today . The minaret is the northernmost Ottoman structure in Europe.

history

The mosque was built by Arnaut Pascha in the 17th century immediately after the city was conquered by the Turks in 1624 . After the city was recaptured by Charles of Lorraine , it was initially used as a church and was finally demolished in the 19th century.

tourism

The minaret is now Eger's landmark, it can be climbed via a narrow spiral staircase with 97 steps to the balcony at a height of 26 meters.
