The Chamber of Deputies (Spanish: Cámara de Diputados ) is one of the two chambers of the Congress of the Union of Mexico . The other chamber is the Senate . The structure and functions of the two chambers of Congress are laid down in Articles 50 to 70 of the Mexican Constitution of 1917.

    composition

The House of Representatives consists of 500 members who are elected for three years using a trench system . There is one MP for every 200,000 citizens. 200 of the MPs are elected from national lists. Their election is intended to compensate for the representation of local and regional interests by the 300 directly elected.

Since the substitute MPs are elected together with the MPs, by-elections are rare.

Of the 500 members, 300 are directly elected in their constituencies using a majority voting system, the other 200 using a proportional representation system based on the votes cast on the list on which they stood. The seats of these MPs are not tied to electoral districts.

From 1917 to 2015, MPs were not allowed to run again in the next election to the House of Representatives. As a result, the House of Representatives was one of the few legislative bodies that was completely renewed every time an election was held. That was different for the first time in the election in 2018: The MPs are now allowed to stand for re-election. Elections to the Congress that take place in the middle of the six-year term are called elecciones intermedias ( mid-term elections ).

    history

A copy of the Mexican Empire's Declaration of Independence was given to the Provisional Government, and later it was exhibited in the Chamber of Deputies until the building was destroyed by fire in 1909.
