The Nevis Reformation Party (short: NRP ) is a political party in St. Kitts and Nevis , which was founded on August 1, 1970 in Nevis .

history

The party was founded on August 1, 1970 against the background of the Christena disaster , a ferry accident with 233 dead between the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. On May 10, 1971, the NRP took part in national parliamentary elections for the first time and achieved 7.1% of the vote, thus moving into parliament with one member. Including the election in 1989, the party achieved double-digit results in the following years and was mostly represented by two members in parliament. From 1980 to 1984, the NRP entered into a coalition with the Peoples' Action Movement as a junior partner and thus assumed government responsibility for the first and so far last time. In the last parliamentary election in 2015, the NRP was the fourth strongest power with slight gains to 10.8% of the vote and again won a seat in parliament.

In addition to the national parliamentary elections, the regional elections on Nevis are important for the party. Here the NRP is in competition with the Concerned Citizens' Movement. From 2006 to 2017 the Nevis Reformation Party was able to win a majority in the Nevis Island Assembly , in the 2017 election the party suffered a significant defeat and only won one of the five seats in the assembly. This defeat led to restructuring within the party and a debate about reorientation. In 2018 Robello Hector was elected party chairman and announced a renewal of the party.

Chairperson

In the position of party chairman, the NRP relies on Constance, in its long history it has had three chairmen:
