Tess Gerritsen (born June 12, 1953 in San Diego , California ) is an American writer . Her international breakthrough came in 1996 with the thriller Cold Hearts . The television series Rizzoli & Isles on TNT and VOX is based on the series Maura Isles & Jane Rizzoli by Gerritsen.

Tess Gerritsen grew up in San Diego ( California ) and studied medicine at Stanford University and the University of California in San Francisco . In 1979 she passed her exams and then worked as an internist in Honolulu ( Hawaii ). During the first pregnancy , Gerritsen decided not to work as a doctor anymore, but to take care of the upbringing of the children. At the same time, she started writing and submitted a short story to a literary competition, for which she was awarded first prize. Entitled call after Midnight 1987 published her first book, then followed eight more romantic thriller . Gerritsen also wrote the screenplay for Adrift , which was presented as Movie of the Week in 1993 by the television station CBS .

In the following years Gerritsen switched to the medical genre, which is a connection to her earlier work. Tess Gerritsen achieved her international breakthrough with Harvest (German title: Kalte Herzen ) in 1996. The thriller is about the doctor Abby , who, while working in the clinic, has to recognize that transplanted organs come from dubious sources. According to his own statement, the stories of a retired police officer about organ trafficking in Russia were the main reason for the story. Harvest reached a placement on the bestseller list of the New York Times , Gerritsen sold the film rights to Paramount Pictures or DreamWorks .
