John Pratt, 1st Marquess Camden

John Jeffreys Pratt, 1st Marquess Camden KG PC FSA (born February 11, 1759 in London , † October 8, 1840 in Seale ) was a British politician .

Life

Pratt was the only son of Lord Chancellor Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden (1714–1794) and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas Jeffreys, born. He attended Trinity College , Cambridge .

In 1780 he became a Member of Parliament for Bath in the House of Commons and in the same year received the lucrative office of Teller of the Exchequer , which he held until his death, but in 1812 waived the associated income. Under William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne , he served between 1782 and 1783 as Lord of the Admiralty and under William Pitt the Younger between 1783 and 1789 and Lord of the Treasury between 1789 and 1792. In 1793 he became a member of the Privy Council . In 1794 he was initially given the subordinate title of his father Baron Camden ( Writ of Acceleration ); a short time later he inherited the dignity of Earl Camden after his death and became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland the following year . As an opponent of Catholic emancipation and a representative of an unpopular policy, he was rejected by the people of Ireland . This culminated in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 .

Shortly after the rebellion was suppressed, he abdicated. In 1804 he became Minister of War and Colonial Affairs . From 1805 to 1806 and again from 1807 to 1812 he was Lord President of the Council . In 1812 he was promoted to Marquess Camden .

Camden was also Lord Lieutenant of Kent between 1808 and 1840 and Chancellor of the University of Cambridge between 1834 and 1840 . 1799 was accepted as a knight in the Order of the Garter , in 1802 elected a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London .

family

Lord Camden married Frances Molesworth, daughter of William Molesworth, in 1785. She died in Bayham Abbey , Sussex , in July 1829 . After his death, Lord Camden was followed by his only son, George .
