Secretary of State for War and the Colonies
The Secretary of State for War and the Colonies was a minister in the British cabinet who had the highest authority over the British army and the British colonies (except India ). This office was introduced in 1801 and lasted until 1854, when the War and Colonial Department was separated into two ministries - the War Office and the Colonial Office - each headed by a separate cabinet minister.
The ministers were assisted by the Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies as Secretary of State.
