action

The young horticultural architect Holly meets the wealthy real estate entrepreneur Nick while jogging with her bulldog Hudson. The two make an appointment and fall in love. Nick's half-brother, Ben, an introverted writer, comes to Long Island to bury his late father and organize the future of his house. Without knowing about her relationship with Nick, Ben hires Holly to take care of the overgrown garden. When Nick comes to visit, Ben confesses to him that he has fallen in love with Holly, who has since moved into his empty summer house. Nick continues to hide his relationship with Holly, but lets Holly know of Ben's feelings. When Nick learns that Ben has leukemia , he asks Holly to temporarily start a relationship with Ben so that he can gain new hope for his therapy. Holly is initially not enthusiastic about the idea and would like to keep the relationship with Ben on a friendly basis, but during a stay at Ben's beach house the two get closer.

Nick offers himself as a bone marrow donor for his brother. After the bone marrow transplant , Holly supports Ben with visits to the hospital during his isolation. After his recovery, Ben applies for Holly's hand and they both get married. During the wedding reception, Ben learns of Nick and Holly's relationship and their deal. Ben then flees. Nick tracks him down in the harbor, where there is a powerful debate in which Nick accuses Ben of breaking Holly's heart. Ben leaves the harbor in the sailboat, but eventually returns to Holly.

In a subplot, Holly's acquaintance Joy, a single mother of three children, befriends her old college colleague, the bookseller Carl.

A summer in Long Island is a teamWorx production and was created with German and South African contributors . Some of the supporting roles were also given to South African actors. The dog Hudson is portrayed by the English bulldog mix Bruno and comes from a German film animal school. The animal had previously appeared in several films, including Dogs Have Short Legs and Da Comes Kalle .

Locations

The game scenes were filmed under the working title A Summer in New England from the end of January to the end of February 2009 in the South African metropolis of Cape Town and the surrounding area. In addition to the city center of Cape Town (with Nick's real estate office, among others), the filming locations include the port of Hout Bay , the beach of Kommetjie (both on the Cape Peninsula ) and street scenes from Wynberg and Stellenbosch . Which is in accordance with the working title Design of New England in the extreme northeast of the United States set up: The cars bear hallmarks of Maine , doctor and clinic have addresses in Portland (Maine) . Some landscape shots from New England were cut between the game scenes and landscapes shot in South Africa. The skyline of Boston can be seen briefly , two aerial photos of the port of Camden (Maine) and lighthouses in Maine ( Two Bush Island Light , Owl's Head Light ) and Rhode Island ( Beavertail Lighthouse on Conanicut Island ). Two South African lighthouses are also shown, Slangkop Lighthouse near Kommetjie and Danger Point Lighthouse near Gansbaai , but none from Long Island, which is located in the US state of New York and is the eponymous location in the broadcast version of the film .

The second film in the same ZDF series was shot a little later by teamWorx with other participants, also in Cape Town. Depending on the location, it is entitled A Summer in Cape Town .

Soundtrack

The instrumental soundtrack by Karim Sebastian Elias is complemented by songs by well-known artists. The theme music is Van Morrison's Days Like This , during the wedding reception Foolproof by Ron Sexsmith can be heard, as well as earlier in the film Ray Charles and Van Morrison in a duet entitled Crazy Love for the credits .

The repetition on the same ZDF slot on July 29, 2012 resulted in a higher participation than the first broadcast with 5.22 million viewers and a 16.3 percent market share.

criticism

TV magazines described the film as "knitted according to the tried and tested pattern" or "Sunday like everyone else on ZDF". The news portal come-on.de , which belongs to the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag, dealt with the film in more detail . The impressive landscape shots, the soundtrack that creates a summery atmosphere and the comedic interludes by Holly's bulldog are highlighted. In contrast, "many scenes seemed lengthy and bland" and the developing love stories sometimes seemed a bit implausible, which was mainly due to the lack of emotionality and depth of the male leading actors. Petra Schmidt-Schaller, on the other hand, literally outshines her male colleagues and plays the lively Holly with visible joy. Tilmann P. Gangloff sees the latter in a similar way on Kino.de , who emphasizes, however, that the perfect cast of the three main actors "lifts the film well above the average of Sunday melodramas on ZDF". The critic Rainer Tittelbach praises the trio of leading actors, the camera work and the "great flow ". He sees the "tasteful summer movie" as an "aesthetic promise" of a paradigm shift in the "stale Pilcher-Seich dodging genre" of TV melodrama.
