Gansbaai (also Gans Bay , German: "Gänsebucht") is a town in the municipality of Overstrand , District Overberg , Western Cape Province in South Africa . The city is located 170 kilometers southeast of Cape Town at an altitude of 35 meters on the coast of Walker Bay .
history
Gansbaai was founded by fishermen in 1881 and named after the numerous wild geese that occur there. Gansbaai was still a fishing village until the end of the 20th century. By Hai -Tourism the population increased from 1,491 (1970) to 11,598 in (2011). In addition, there are 22,000 tourists during the holiday season.

- The reason for the rapid growth in population and tourist numbers is the great number of great white sharks ( Carcharodon carcharias ) off the coast around the island of Dyer Island . Caged shark diving attracts many visitors.

- Klipgat Cave
- Already in the Middle Stone Age , 60,000 to 50,000 years ago, this cave was permanently inhabited. The early Homo sapiens left behind the remains of their food, fireplaces and stone tools. Since the sea level was lower then than it is today, the coast was three kilometers away.
