Conanicut Island is the second largest island in Narragansett Bay in the state of Rhode Island . The Newport Bridge connects the island to the east with Aquidneck Island and Newport . The Jamestown-Verrazano Bridge also connects North Kingstown and the mainland . Jamestown is on the island . The United States Census Bureau documents a land area of 24.46 km² and 5,622 residents according to the 2000 census .
The island was named after chief Canonicus of the Narraganset who inhabited the island.
