North Kingstown is a city in Washington County , Rhode Island , United States .

geography

North Kingstown is located on the west coast of Narragansett Bay about 30 kilometers southwest of Providence on the southern edge of the Providence Metropolitan Area , a metropolitan area on the Atlantic coast with 1.5 million inhabitants around Providence, about 40 km southwest of Boston and 200 km northeast of New York .

The urban area has an area of ​​151.1 km², a quarter of which includes a portion of the Narragansett Bay. The mean height is 25 m above sea level. Due to the particularities of New England's administrative structure, there are several villages in the urban area of ​​North Kingstown, including Belleville, La Fayette and Wickford.

To the west of the metropolitan area there is a connection to Rhode Island State Route 4 , which runs parallel to the coast and meets Interstate 95 at East Greenwich . The Amtrak's historic northeast line also runs to the west of the city . Quonset State Airport is about three miles northeast of the city center.

history

The land of the later city was originally inhabited by the Narraganset . In 1674, Kings Town was founded in southern Rhode Island, whose large administrative area also included the later cities of South Kingstown and North Kingstown. In 1723 South Kingstown was separated from North Kingstown as a separate administrative unit.

Due to its numerous natural harbors and beaches, North Kingstown acquired a reputation as a port city early on and was a popular place for summer retreat . As in many areas of Rhode Island, the hydropower available from numerous waterways provided an opportunity for the development of a textile industry . In addition, the location on the strategically important southwest coast of Narragansett Bay in connection with the natural harbors led to the establishment of departments of the United States Navy in Quonset Point and Davisville . The base at Quonset Point existed until 1973.
