Mike Birbiglia (born June 20, 1978 in Shrewsbury , Massachusetts ) is an American entertainer , filmmaker and author .

Childhood and youth

Birbiglia, the youngest of four siblings, is of Italian descent. Birbiglia attended St. John's High School and, until 1996, St. Mark's School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts .

He claims he was inspired by Steven Wright to write jokes when he was young. In 2000 he graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, DC

During his college years he was a member of the improvisational theater and worked at the local comedy club and performed at The Improv in Washington, DC.

Career

After moving to New York in 2010, Mike Birbiglia first appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2002 .

He performed at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen in 2003 and gave contributions to the radio show The Moth for the first time . In 2004 his first comedy album Dog Years was released . My Secret Public Album, Volume 1a, a compilation of his appearances on The Bob and Tom Show, followed the following year. In 2006, Two Drink Mike (2006), My Secret Public Journal Live (2007) was released via Comedy Central Records . In 2007 Birbiglia starred in the independent film Stanley Cuba , which premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival .

In 2008 he started his own comedy show Sleepwalk with me , performing off-Broadway at the Bleecker Street Theater . The Show was promoted by Nathan Lane . The New York Times described it as " simply perfect ".

In 2010 Birbiglia published the book Sleepwalk with Me, and Other Painfully True Stories , as well as an audio version in 2011, which topped the Billboard Comedy Charts . The book, which also appeared on the New York Times and Washington Post bestseller lists , was a candidate for the 2011 Thurber Prize for American Humor .

In 2011 he also started his second one-man show My Girlfriend's Boyfriend , with which he also appeared in Canada , Australia and Great Britain until June 2013 .

He made his debut as a film producer and director with the film of the same name, which takes up his REM sleep behavior disorder and sleepwalking .

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won the NEXT Audience Award. It was also listed as "Festival Favorites" at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Appearances in the films Trainwreck , Going the Distance , Cedar Rapids , Your Sister's Sister and The Fault in Our Stars followed . He also appeared in the television series Girls , Inside Amy Schumer , and Broad City . For his role in Orange Is the New Black , he received the Screen Actors Guild Award - Comedy in 2016 .

In his second film Don't Think Twice , which was released in 2016 , he made use of his experiences in improvisational theater.

In February 2017, an appearance by Mike Birbiglia under the name Thank God for Jokes was published on Netflix.

In April 2017, Mike announced the show The New One . He performed with it first off-broadway in 25 cities. Due to increased demand, he performed on Broadway at the Cort Theater from October 2018 to January 2019 .
