Chip Kidd (* 1964 in Reading , Pennsylvania as Charles Kidd ) is an American illustrator and author .

Life

In 1986, Kidd began designing books full-time as a junior assistant to Alfred Knopf , but also worked for years as a freelance media designer for clients such as Amazon and HarperCollins .

Ever since he designed the cover for Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park , he has been considered one of the most prominent book illustrators of our time. USA Today newspaper called him “ the closest thing to a rock star in graphic design ”, while James Ellroy called him “ the world's greatest book-jacket designer ” for his cover design .

Kidd illustrated books by such well-known authors as Frank Miller , Bret Easton Ellis , Haruki Murakami , Dean Koontz , Cormac McCarthy , Charles Schulz , Osamu Tezuka and John Updike . Numerous authors, such as Oliver Sacks , have negotiated special contractual clauses, thanks to which only Kidd can illustrate their books. Together with Art Spiegelman, he also worked on a biography of Jack Cole in 2003 .

Since 2001, Kidd has also devoted himself increasingly to writing. His first novel, The Cheese Monkeys , has autobiographical traits and was continued in The Learners . In 2012, Kidd also wrote the comic Batman: Death by Design for DC Comics .

Kidd is currently the Artistic Director of the Random House publishing group and lives in New York .
