Didymodon acutus ( Spitzblättriges double toothed Moss ) is a moss -Art from the family pottiaceae . A common synonym is barbula acuta (Brid.) Brid.

features

The moss forms loose, low-growing, olive-green to reddish-brown lawns. The little branched stems are 0.5 to 2 centimeters in size. The leaves are dry and slightly bent, sticking out upright when moist. They are gradually narrowed into a long, sharp point for an egg-shaped base and have entire margins. The leaf margins are bent back, flat towards the tip. The strong leaf vein emerges as a spike tip at least in the upper leaves and has short, hexagonal cells on the upper side (ventral). The thick-walled leaf cells are almost uniform throughout the leaf, only briefly rectangular at the base next to the rib, otherwise rounded and more or less smooth.

The diocesan way seldom works. The seta is reddish, the elongated egg-shaped to ellipsoidal capsule is mostly upright, the peristome teeth are spirally wound, the capsule lid is beaked crooked. The smooth spores are 9 to 14 micrometers in size.

Similar species

Didymodon acutus is closely related to Didymodon rigidulus . Differentiating the two species can be difficult, as can the species Didymodon icmadophilus or Didymodon validus . Distinguishing features are among others: In D. acutus the ventral stereids are unicellular in the cross section of the leaf vein, and the leaf margin is also unicellular.

Location requirements

The heat-loving, lime-loving species grows on dry soils in light-rich locations, so often in gaps, shallow, open-ground, and rock-interspersed areas in dry grass. It also settles on walls (especially vineyard walls), in quarries, gravel and clay pits. Frequent accompanying mosses are Didymodon luridus , Barbula convoluta , Tortella inclinata , Pseudocrossidium hornschuchianum , Weissia fallax or Aloina aloides .

distribution

Didymodon acutus is a warmth-loving, sub-Mediterranean flora element and is particularly widespread in Europe in the southern, western and central parts. In Germany, the main distribution is in the hill country of central and southern Germany, in the other areas it is very rare.

In addition to Europe, there are deposits in Macaronesia , Central and Southwest Asia, North and Central America and North Africa.
