Didymodon is a genus of mosses from the family pottiaceae .
features
The plants form light green, reddish green or brownish to blackish lawns or cushions. The stems are upright, simple to branched, up to about 2 (max. 9) centimeters in size. The leaves are ovate to narrowly lanceolate or triangular ovate, sharply pointed to rounded and moist upright or bent back, usually have bent back edges and are whole or rarely toothed. The leaf vein extends almost to the tip of the leaf or can emerge briefly.
The lamina cells are more or less uniform in the entire leaf area, above square, hexagonal, rounded to short rectangular and often slightly papillary, below square to rectangular and mostly smooth.
The species are usually diocesan . The upright seta is usually 0.3 to 2 centimeters long, the capsule egg-shaped to cylindrical and more or less upright, the peristome teeth short upright to long and winding, the kalyptra hood-shaped.
Systematics and types
The species of the cosmopolitan genus Didymodon were or are often assigned to the closely related genus Barbula . There are around 125 species worldwide. The following species are represented in Germany, Austria and Switzerland:
