The Pottiaceae are the eponymous family of the moss - order Pottiales .
features
The mosses of this family are typical acrocarpic mosses that form dense cushions of various sizes. The leaves have different shapes, but there is always a strong vein. In many species this emerges from the leaf as a spike tip or as a glass hair. In almost all species, the leaf cells in the upper part of the leaf are strongly papilose and rounded, while the cells in the lower part of the leaf are usually smooth, water-white and rectangular.
The capsule stalk is usually elongated and smooth. The capsule is usually ovate to cylindrical. The capsule is seldom depressed and celistocarp. The capsule has 16 peristome teeth , the peristome can also be missing. The teeth sit on a low or high basilar membrane and are of different shapes.
Occurrence
Many Pottiaceae prefer very bright locations. There are species among them that can tolerate severe drought and strong sunlight. Many Potticeae grow on very calcareous or very salty sites.
Systematics
The family is divided into 5 subfamilies and 83 genera with around 1425 species:
