Syntrichia is a genus of akrokarpen mosses from the family pottiaceae .

features

The mosses are similar to the tortula species, but in general they are often larger and stronger. They form small to large, green to yellow-brown or red-brown clusters. The stems are simple or forked, the leaves protruding or curved when moist are obovate, spatulate or tongue-shaped, rarely broadly elongated-lanceolate. The leaf margins are flat or bent and usually entire. The leaf vein extends into the leaf tip, emerges as a short tip or very often as a long and mostly toothed glass hair.

At the base of the leaf, on both sides of the rib, there is an approximately inverted U-shaped group of large, rectangular, smooth, hyaline and thin-walled cells, which are clearly delimited from the upper, smaller, mostly round-square and strongly papillary lamina cells.

The species are dioecious (dioecious), autocratic (monoecious) or synocial (hermaphroditic). The red or brown, elongated and smooth seta carries an upright, straight or slightly curved cylindrical spore capsule with a cone-shaped lid and a cap-shaped calyptra . The 32 peristome teeth are thread-shaped.

The mosses colonize rock, earth and tree bark. They are cosmopolitan.

Systematics

Syntrichia was long assigned to the genus Tortula and has recently been separated from it as an independent genus. They appear to be a monophyletic group.

species

According to Frey / Fischer / Stech, 90 species worldwide are included in the genus Syntrichia . However, the species delimitation is sometimes difficult and not undisputed. Several species that are difficult to distinguish ( S. calcicola , S. densa , S. glabra , S. princeps , S. ruralis s.str. , S. ruraliformis , S. subpapillosissima ) are also part of the species group Syntrichia ruralis agg. or Syntrichia ruralis s. Latin , often referred to as Tortula ruralis complex, summarized.

The following species are represented in Germany, Austria and Switzerland:
