Gymnostomum (German Nacktmundmoose ) is a cosmopolitan widespread genus of the moss from the family of Pottiaceae .

features

The species mostly colonize limestone rocks in usually very humid locations and form dense cushion lawns. The upright and forked rungs are up to about 3 centimeters high, rarely higher. The trunk cross-section usually shows a central cord. The ovate-lanceolate to linear leaves are blunt to pointed, entire to crenulated, the edges flat or slightly inflected at the top. The strong leaf vein ends in the leaf tip or just before it. When wet, the leaves are upright or bent back, when dry, they are more or less bent and twisted, but not curled. The cells are rectangular and smooth at the base of the leaf, and rounded and papilose in the upper part of the leaf.

The upright, egg-shaped to ellipsoidal spore capsules on the 3 to 6 millimeter long and also upright Seta do not have a peristome (name). The capsule lid is beaked, the kalyptra hood-shaped. The species are diocesan .

The species in the genus often bear strong resemblance to other members of the Pottiaceae family , particularly to species from the genera Anoectangium , Gyroweisia , Hymenostylium and Molendoa . A reliable differentiation from sterile plants of the genera mentioned is sometimes very difficult.

There are 25 species worldwide. The three types listed are represented in Germany, Austria and Switzerland:
