The open-air plays in Schwäbisch Hall are the second oldest open - air plays in Germany and have been taking place in Schwäbisch Hall since 1925 on the 54 steps of the open staircase of St. Michael's town church, which was completed in 1511 . In addition, there were also performances in Hall's Globe Theater from 2000 to 2016 . In March 2019 a "New Globe" will be opened instead of the old one. Initially, only the mystery play Jedermann was performed by Hugo von Hofmannsthal . Until 1968, mainly classical comedies were presented, gradually contemporary pieces, musicals and children's theater were also included in the program. Christian Doll has been running the festival since the 2017 season, replacing Christoph Biermeier , who had previously directed the festival for 12 years.

For the 75th anniversary in 2000, the city had a wooden rotunda built in the style of London 's famous Shakespeare's Globe Theater . In March 2019, the new Globe was opened as a successor to the old one. Thanks to a lockable roof and the temperature control of the interior, the New Globe also enables performances in bad weather, in spring, autumn and winter.

The festival belongs to the Association of Ten German Festival Locations .
