Globe Theater in Schwäbisch Hall (2019)

The New Haller Globe is a theater building in Schwäbisch Hall on the Kocherinsel Unterwöhrd . In 2000, a temporary wooden structure was built, which was replaced by a new building in 2019. In contrast to the name of the first Haller Globe Theater, it now bears the name New Haller Globe .

The new building - the New Haller Globe

The building with a natural stone facade made of shell limestone is not only playable and usable on the inside, but also on the outside thanks to a flexible, extendable stage. In contrast to the wooden predecessor building, there is a foyer with catering, toilets, set rooms, actors' cloakroom and "proper lighting and stage technology". The artistic director Christian Doll emphasized above all that in summer it was an open-air theater, "because you can then open the roof, which is closed in winter, and then the character of the house changes completely." There is space for 371 spectators in the building, a three-story stage is available for the actors. The theater opened on March 30, 2019 with Shakespeare's comedy “ Was ihr wollt ”.

history

Globe Theater in Schwäbisch Hall (2000–2016)

Since 1925, open-air theater has been performed seasonally in Schwäbisch Hall on the more than 500-year-old flight of stairs in front of the main St. Michael church . As a result of the success, additional venues were added, in the 1990s the theater cellar on the harbor market and the theater barn in the open air museum in Wackershofen . In 2000, a wooden Globe Theater was built as a temporary solution based on the London model on the Kocherinsel "Unterwöhrd" as part of a public campaign: a three-story round building with a center open at the top.

After sixteen seasons with 50 productions and over a quarter of a million visitors, the New Haller Globe, which opened in 2019, was born. In June 2016, the municipal council approved the existing plans for a further developed round theater on Unterwöhrd. Construction work should start in the fall. In autumn 2016, the previous Globe Theater was also dismantled. In September 2016 it was announced that it had been sold to the Berlin Globe Works GmbH. In Berlin-Charlottenburg , it is to be rebuilt and used by 2020.

The previous building

The previous building was built in 1999/2000 according to designs by the Schwäbisch Hall Architects' Association and opened in 2000 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Schwäbisch Hall open-air theater .

The construction was based on the Globe Theater in London . The building took on the structural characteristics of the model such as polygon , three-storey structure and wood as a building material, but did not completely imitate the building. This should enable the “unmistakable peculiarities in form and access [...] to identify as a Haller Globe Theater”. The theater had 570 seats. It was one of eight regularly played Globe theaters worldwide.

In 2001 the building was awarded the “Exemplary Building in Baden-Württemberg” prize by the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects.
