The Popess is a musical by the German composer Dennis Martin , based on Donna Woolfolk Cross ' historical novel Die Päpessin , which uses the literary material of the legend of Popess Johanna .

background

The developers and organizers of the musical Die Päpstin , Spotlight Musicalproduktion GmbH , acquired the world's first stage rights for the 1996 novel from the American author Donna Woolfolk Cross.

First songs as well as some actors, u. a. Sabrina Weckerlin in the title role were presented to the public at a press conference in the marble hall of the Fulda City Palace on September 1, 2010. In January 2011, Spotlight Musicalproduktion GmbH presented more scenes and numbers from the play in front of invited sponsors and press representatives in the Fulda S-Club. The following March, the production company advertised the upcoming premiere with a promotional tour through several German cities, during which further excerpts of the piece from parts of the later original line-up were presented to a larger audience. Donna Cross herself accompanied this tour.

The musical was on June 3, 2011 at the Palace Theater in Fulda premiered . It was a co-production with the Brno City Theater , whose workshops had made backdrops, costumes and props for the production with a view to later taking over the play into their own repertoire. The director of the Brno City Theater Stanislav Moša directed , the choreography was by Julia Poulet, the set was designed by Christoph Weyers. Even before the premiere, a studio CD with most of the musical numbers contained in the piece was recorded with the original cast, which is still the only more comprehensive German-language recording of Die Päpstin . After 111 performances and 73,000 spectators, the 2011 season ended on August 14, 2011.

On February 2, 2012, The Popess was first seen in Czech at the Brno City Theater, with a live orchestra being used for the first time in this piece. The title role was played by Hana Holišová . A CD recording of the Czech version was also made. Following the first series of games in Brno, the musical was performed again in a revised version in the Fulda Castle Theater and in the Hameln Theater. Scenes and transitions were streamlined, the role of Saint Catherine was deleted, additional remodeling music was added and the second act was supplemented by a quintet ( Parasite of Power - recapitulation ). During this season a studio single CD with four numbers was released, sung by the alternating line-up of Johanna, Sophie Berner .

The musical was performed again in Fulda from June to July 2013 and then played in Hameln from the beginning of September to mid-September; thereafter the production was transferred to Munich and was performed there from mid to late September 2013.

In January 2014 the Brno City Theater performed its own production, but in German, together with some guests from the Fulda production at the City Theater Ingolstadt. Later in 2014, Die Päpstin was performed again as part of the Musical Summer Fulda from June 20 to July 13.

On March 20, 2015, the musical Die Päpstin had its new production (musical direction: Michael Ellis Ingram, production and choreography: Iris Limbarth) premiere at the Nordhausen Theater with Femke Soetenga in the title role. The staging was also carried over into the following season. In June and July 2015, the musical was also performed again in Fulda.

In December 2017, the musical was staged for twelve performances in a new production by Benjamin Sahler in the blower hall in Neunkirchen (Saar). Anna Hofbauer took on the role of Johanna. The new production was then shown for five performances in Stuttgart. Due to great demand, two additional performances were played in Stuttgart.

In the summer of 2018, The Popess was performed again with Sabrina Weckerlin in the title role at the location of the premiere, in the Schlosstheater Fulda.

On September 29, 2018, the piece premiered in Hungarian. The production by Iván Hargitai at József Attila Színház in Budapest, which showed the musical for the first time in a modern, contemporary setting, was on the program again in 2019.

From November 30th to December 16, 2018 the play was shown in the Festspielhaus Füssen , afterwards the same production was performed again in the Neue Gebläsehalle in Neunkirchen (Saar) from December 27, 2018 to December 31, 2018. In April 2019 the piece returned to Füssen for seven performances. From June 14 to July 6, 2019, the original production in Fulda was resumed for 31 performances. Due to Sabrina Weckerlin's illness, Isabel Trinkaus took over the first occupation of the title role for the entire series at short notice.

From August 10 to September 2, 2019, the Füssen version of Die Päpstin was performed again in the Theaterhaus Stuttgart .

The original production was shown for the third time in Hameln from December 13 to 31, 2019. In the last game series of this production for the time being, Sabrina Weckerlin , Mathias Edenborn , Christian Schöne and Marcus G. Kulp took over the roles that they had already played in the 2011 premiere. Sascha Kurth, Jenny Schlensker, Stephan R. Przywara, Doreen Sommer, Torsten Paul and Jörg Alt were also from the premiere series, but in some cases in different roles.

Another new production by the Kolping Music Theater, directed by Michael Schaumann, premiered on February 14, 2020 in the Congress Centrum Stadtgarten in Schwäbisch Gmünd . For Tina Haas , who fell ill at short notice in the title role, Misha Kovar jumped in at the first performances .
