Frielinghausen is a district in the town of Gevelsberg in the Ennepe-Ruhr district in the administrative district of Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ).

Location and description

The densely populated Frielinghausen lies west of the city center. The state road L666 crosses the district, the route of the disused railway line Witten – Schwelm branches off from the railway line Düsseldorf-Derendorf – Dortmund Süd .

Etymology and history

Frielinghausen is probably due to the large deforestation of the old Saxon Freilinge . Frielinghausen stands for the house of a Freiling (Hausen = settlements).

Frielinghausen is mentioned for the first time in 1250 as the property of the Gevelsberg monastery , and in 1316 in monastery files. In a treasure book from 1486 of the Mylinghausen farmers , the place is listed in the spelling Vrylynkhusen . The estate is listed there with the second highest tax burden, which underlines the importance of the settlement. This position is confirmed again in the tax collection of 1634.

The industrialization of the place began in 1690 with the construction of a hammer mill for the production of scythes . The company existed until 1870.
